Belfast Telegraph Home > NewsTHE DUP in Limavady today appealed for calm following a second night of violence in the town.
One man was today arrested after police were pelted with missiles while dealing with bonfire debris.
A number of objects were fired at police just after 2.15am today as officers removed bonfire debris which they said had been deliberately pulled across Edenmore Road.
A gang arrived 15 minutes after the initial attack and pelted the officers with stones.
The stone throwing was repeated an hour later.
This morning's incidents marked the second day of attacks by gangs in the town.
On Saturday night police, firefighters and a taxi driver in the town narrowly escaped injury when they were pelted by a crowd of youths.
PSNI and fire officers had arrived at Ballyquinn Road shortly after 11.30pm after receiving reports of bins being set alight.
A mob then attacked them with stones, bottles and other missiles.
A taxi driver who was stationed nearby managed to escape uninjured when a bottle smashed through a window of his car.
DUP Councillor Leslie Cubbitt, who left the scene of the bonfire an hour before the first attack, branded all those involved "thugs".
He said that there were only around six people remaining at the scene when he left.
"It was a very peaceful event. There were hundreds of people there with singing and fireworks to celebrate and there was no intimidation, no-one stopping cars and no-one getting attacked."
Appealing for calm in the town today, Mr Cubbitt said he was "100% sure" republicans were behind some of the disturbances.
Meanwhile, a man was arrested early this morning after two rival factions clashed violently in the Co Londonderry village of Kilrea.
Police fired seven shots into the air to disperse the crowd of rioters who, it is understood, were fighting over the erection of flags in the area.
Up to 60 people were involved in the fracas, which took place in the Diamond area of the village and lasted for several hours.
Several protesters were hurt but there were no life threatening injuries.
No police officers were injured.
